There are two blueberry bushes planted an a whiskey barrel on my deck- “Misty” and “Bluecrop.” I’m excited because they’re flowering prolifically this year and I see lots of berries coming! They’re covered with bird netting because last year half the harvest flew away.

nice! are these “standard” sized blueberry bushes in whiskey barrels? I got a dwarf blueberry in a container because I cant find a space to dedicate to acidified soils, but if a whiskey barrel works, I’ll totally do that!

Growing My Own Jerusalem Artichokes / Sunchokes
Picked these guys up at the farmer’s market and planted them in last fall. All the little pink nodes and buds were an encouraging sight. I was getting anxious because it’s getting late in the spring, and I’ve not seem any activities. Then, in the last several days, they all starting peaking through and growing like mad! Hope these guys will help create a natural privacy fence between me and the neighbors…at least for half the year.

Oreganooooo!! 🌿🌿😄 After drying it for a few days, I shucked it, jarred it, and am now planning something to use it in. Home-dried herbs are the best 😊😊

Oh fantastic! I’d love to know what you cook it up in! I love oregano in pretty much anything — soups, beans, pasta, sauces…

thepoisondiaries:

The raw castor beans are the most toxic part of this plant, due to its presence of ricin. The leathel dose in adults is considered to be 4-8 seeds, due to this it is sometimes known as the most poisonous plant in the world. Symptoms of an overdose from ricin, can include nausea, diarrhea, tachycardia, hypotension and seizures persisting for up to a week. If ingested, symptoms may not occur for at least 36 hours although they do commonly begin within 2-4hours.Symptoms of ingestion can include a burning sensation in mouth and throat, abdominal pain, purging and bloody diarrhoea. Within several days severe dehydration may occur, a drop in blood pressure and a decrease in urine. Unless treated, death can be expected to occur within 3–5 days, however in most cases a full recovery can be made.   Poisoning occurs when animals, including humans, ingest broken seeds or break the seed by chewing: intact seeds may pass through the digestive tract without releasing the toxin. Toxicity varies among animal species: four seeds will kill a rabbit, five a sheep, six an ox or horse, seven a pig, and eleven a dog.

Wasn’t this the poison sent to Obama recently? Anyway, I’m surprised how poisonous this is. When my mom was little, this stuff grew everywhere and they would pick the seeds by hand. I think.
